3. The Joy, Comfort, and Stress-Reducing Power of Art
Art can be a powerful form of self-care and a way to express emotions. Engaging in art allows individuals to tap into their creativity and explore their thoughts and feelings in a safe and non-judgmental way. Here are some art pieces and ways that they can be a form of self-care and emotional expression:
3.1. Marina Abramovic | The Artist is Present
Marina Abramovic's groundbreaking work has inspired artists around the world, leaving an indelible mark on their artistic practice and performance style. Even the illustrious Lady Gaga, known as Mother Monster, has expressed her profound admiration for Abramovic, hailing her as The Grandmother of Performance Art.
She's the reason I'm able to do what I do. When I saw her work for the first time, it really changed me. It was like something inside me woke up, and I suddenly realized that this was what I wanted to do with my life. Lady Gaga
When Marina Abramovic first proposed her idea for this performance, MOMA art curators thought it was crazy and nonsensical. But she persisted and brought her vision to life.
In The Artist is Present, Abramovic sat completely still in a chair at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City for an astonishing 736.5 hours over the course of three months in 2010. Visitors from all walks of life were invited to sit across from her for as long as they wished, without speaking or touching. The experience was deeply moving and transformative for many, drawing a diverse range of people to participate.
During the first demo day, there was a table between Marina and the participant sitting across from her. But as the performance progressed, the table was removed from the set, creating a more intimate space for participants to connect with the artist.
One day, a man sat across from Marina and evoked strong emotions in her, causing her to break her motionless pose. The public went wild with applause, and many were moved to tears, whether they were on set, watching live, or later viewing the recorded footage. It was a rare and unforgettable moment that left a lasting impression on everyone who witnessed it. The performance garnered widespread media attention, cementing its place in art history.
It's not surprising that the public quickly drew the conclusion that Marina Abramovic and the man in the video were lovers. The man is none other than Ulay, Marina's longtime partner and collaborator before they eventually parted ways. Together, they created some truly awe-inspiring pieces and their artistic journey is truly one-of-a-kind.
I choose not to reveal his name as I believe that the artist would prefer to be remembered for his work rather than the backstory. Nevertheless, I am happy to share the inspiring tale with you.
Once upon a time, a Western couple ventured to the impoverished streets of India for a holiday. Little did they know that their lives would be forever transformed. One day, while wandering the streets, they stumbled upon a young boy drawing intricate designs on the sand. His talent and passion were undeniable, and the couple was moved to adopt him and welcome him into their family. That young boy grew up to become one of the greatest animators of all time, as even the renowned Norman McLaren 1 once acknowledged. His creativity and skill had no limits, and his unique style mesmerized audiences worldwide.
It's unfortunate that we'll never know what masterpiece he created on that sandy street all those years ago. Nevertheless, his journey from humble beginnings to international recognition is an inspiring and moving tale. This story is a true testament to the transformative power of artistic expression and how it can change lives.
1 McLaren is a well-known name in animation, due to his pioneering work with hand-drawn animation, stop-motion, and optical printing techniques. He was an inspiration to many animators, including the artist mentioned earlier, and his legacy continues to influence the industry today..
3.3. Don Low (志民) | Life is the art of drawing without an eraser
Low is one of the most exciting contemporary artists working in Singapore today. His art explores themes of identity, culture, and social issues. He draws inspiration from his experiences as well as his travels around the world. Overall, his art is vibrant and thought-provoking.
One of his most touching works, although seemingly simple in its expression, has brought people to tears. It's a piece he created in an attempt to capture his father's last moments in bed. I can't even begin to imagine the bravery and composure it must have taken to create such a personal and emotional work of art. Clearly, he wasn't drawing for fame or recognition, but simply to preserve a precious moment in his life.
When I first saw the pieces, I was moved by the power of art to reduce stress and anxiety. Through the act of creating something, individuals can become more present at the moment and find a sense of calm amidst the chaos of life. It's amazing how art can provide a way to process and express complex emotions, and how it can bring people together through shared experiences and shared humanity.
